Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation-Case Control

From 13-16 March 2023, the MVPE-CC consortium participated in the World Health Organization MVIP Investigators meeting in Lilongwe, Malawi to provide updates on the ongoing case-control studies, discussed timelines and received feedback.

The case control studies are designed to evaluate individual-level safety and efficacy endpoints to complement population-level estimates derived from the main Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation (MVPE). From October 2021 and in areas of Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi randomized to receive RTS,S/AS01 as part of the MVPE, cases of meningitis, severe malaria, and death among children age-eligible to have received at least 1 dose of RTS,S/AS01 are being recruited from hospital admissions and community mortality surveillance. Four controls are recruited for each case, matched on age and area of residence, with vaccination status determined from home-based record, immunization registers, and caregiver recall. The study is funded by EDCTP and will end June 2024.
